Flathead on Lures

Flathead are one of the easiest fish to target on lures once you know the basics. The key is staying near the bottom - that's where they sit and ambush prey.

Soft plastics: Cast out, let it hit the bottom, then use slow lifts with pauses. Most bites happen on the drop or pause, so stay alert.

Hardbodies: Shallow and deep diving lures work best over sand flats and drop-offs. Slow retrieve with an occasional twitch is usually enough.

Focus on sandbanks, channel edges, and drop-offs. If there's no action, keep moving until you find them.

Rod Setup:
• 7–7’6ft light–medium spin rod
• 2500 - 3000 size reel
• 6–10lb braid
• 10–15lb leader
• 1/8–1/4 jig heads (soft plastics)
• 70–120mm soft plastics
• 60–120mm shallow/diving hardbody lures

Bream on Lures

Bream are a great lure target but can be a bit picky.Focus on structure - that's where they hang and feed.

Soft plastics: Cast tight to structure, let it sink, then use small, subtle hops and pauses. Keep it slow and natural.

Hardbodies: Small shallow divers work best around structure. Slow roll with light twitches and pauses to trigger bites.

Focus on pontoons, rock walls, oyster racks, and snags. Accuracy is key - get your lure in tight.

Rod Setup:

  • 7ft light spin rod
  • 2500 size reel
  • 6-10lb braid
  • 10-20lb leader
  • 1/8-1/4 jig heads (soft plastics)
  • Shallow/deep diving hardbody lures (60-100mm)

Whiting on Lures

Whiting are a great lure target once you understand how they feed. They spend most of their time over sand and mud flats, picking off worms, prawns, and small bait near the bottom. The key is keeping everything natural, subtle, and small - whiting don’t chase aggressively like flathead.

Soft plastics: Light jig heads, slow movement, and tiny hops. Let it sink to the bottom and gently drag or “walk” it. Most bites feel like a light tap or weight on the line, so don’t strike too hard.

Hardbodies: Small, shallow diving lures worked very slowly over flats or sand edges. A steady retrieve with occasional pauses works best.

Focus on shallow sand flats, oyster edges, and gutters on incoming or outgoing tide. Warmer shallow water is usually more productive.

Rod Setup:

• 6’6–7ft light spin rod
• 1000–2500 size reel
• 2–6lb braid
• 4–8lb fluorocarbon leader
• 1/20–1/12oz jig heads (ultra light)
• 1–2 inch soft plastics (prawns, worms, grubs)
• Small surface lures or 35–60mm shallow hardbodies
